Adopt I Would like to adopt an animal

Say “hello” to our adorable star tortoises! These Indian natives can be found all day long in Robert’s Reptile House, sharing their home with our awesome Fijian crested iguanas. These tortoises have to be seen to be believed. Crikey, they’re as cute as a button!

Star tortoises are found throughout India and Sri Lanka. These gorgeous reptiles were aptly named due to the star-shaped pattern on their carapace. They are one of the smallest land tortoises on the planet, reaching only around 30 centimetres (12 inches) in length! Despite their small size and gentle nature, they are able to survive some of the harshest of environments. Star tortoises frequently inhabit dry, arid scrubland and coconut plantations. They are a primarily herbivorous tortoise, dining on grasses, flowers, fresh shoots, berries and fruits when available.

Unfortunately, due to illegal poaching and collection for the wildlife trade, the wild population of star tortoises is decreasing. Habitat destruction is also a contributing factor to their current vulnerable status. They are species in need of our support!
