Here at Australia Zoo, there’s a bird that can dive as deep and swim as fast as a fish. Introducing the incredible great cormorant! Don’t miss all of the water bird action that unfolds during the Wildlife Warriors Show, in our world-famous Crocoseum.

Great cormorants are the most widely spread of all water birds. Their range includes North America, Europe, Africa, China, India, southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, Australia and even New Zealand.

These aquatic predators are carnivorous and feed on fish, crustaceans, frogs and insects. Great cormorants lack the water-resistant coating on their feathers that many other birds have, giving them amazing ability to dive under the water in pursuit of their prey! And just to top it off, they can hold their breath for up to one minute. Crikey!

Great cormorants are a thriving species that can be spotted in flocks ranging from 2,000 individuals all the way up to 20,000! They are a species of least concern.
